Wheter climbing, camping, or hiking, Yosemite as something for everyone.

The Yosemiteregion of  California takes up almost 1,200 square miles. It is  known for its mighty waterfalls. deep valleys, and huge meadows. People have lived in the Yosemite region for 8,000 years. In the 1830´s people from other places visited. Some people built hotels and houses there. Environmentalists worried about this. They feared the land would be ruined.

The U.S. government stepped into help. In 1890, the area became known as Yosemite National Park. Rules make sure the land is preserved for people to enjoy now and in the future. More than 3 million people visit the park each year.

Yosemite Park is a popular destination for visitors. It has cliffs and rock forms. Many guests spend time gazing at its waterfalls. Yosemite Valleys is open all year. People often travel to valley by car.

Yosemite National Park is also famous for its trees. Giant Sequoias seem to reach the sky. The biggest group of Giant Sequoias is found in Mariposa Grove. Between November and March, the road to Mariposa Grove is closed to cars because of snow. Can you think of other ways to reach the grove? You can hike or ski!

Another great place to visit is Yosemite´s Glacier Point. It is a high place where visitors can see many of the park´s great features. You can see Yosemite Valley.  You can see mountains too. Many people go hang gliding there. In winter, you´ll need skis or snowshoes to reach it.

Have you ever tried to climb a climbing wall? In Yosemite National Park, people climb real rocks! El Capitan is a 3000-foot high (1000m) vertical rock formation, You can hike to the top of El Capitan on one of the trails in the park. Many people try to climb the face of the cliff itself. Climbing El Capitan is very dangerous. Only experienced rock climbers should try it. It is very difficult for park rangers to rescue climbers who get tired or hurt.

Yosemite Falls are amongst the most spectacular waterfalls in the country. The falls are the seventh highest in the world. The tributaries that form the falls lead to the Merced River. The best time to visit Yosemite Falls is in early spring, when the melting snow makes the waters roar.

The Hetch Hetchy Valley has a funny name, and it´s really a fun place! Like Yosemite Valley, it has great views. The Hetch Hetchy Reservoir supplies drinking water to people in San Francisco.
Yosemite National Park is a great vacation place. With all of its great features, there is a something for everyone to enjoy.
